He said this at the end of a six-day training to orientate the in-coming officers on their new work environment, so as to enable them deliver on the AMISOM mandate.

"All the courses that you have been taught are very pertinent to the mission arena. Respect diversity. You will have to interface with a lot of people from various backgrounds,” Kailie said.

Given the multi-national nature of the mission, Kailie urged the officers to be disciplined and respect seniority, irrespective of the country the officer hails from.


"Discipline is the hub around which the wheel of the police revolves,” Kailie stated.

During their one year tour of duty in AMISOM, the police officers will largely provide operational support to their Somali counterparts in the area of public order management and training, conducting patrols, securing key installations, provision of escort duties and securing key events, including the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections, slated to commence this year.

Speaking at the same event, Superintendent of Police, Shehu Ahmed Gani, the Contingent Commander of the Nigeria Formed Police Unit (FPU), thanked the AMISOM Police senior leadership team (SLT) for organising the training which he said was insightful.

"Most of the topics treated (covered) have answered our questions about Somalia and its people,” Gani stated, adding that the training has enabled them to have a better understanding of their new work environment.

The training covered various topics that included the AMISOM Police mandate and tasks, Somali culture, human rights, principles of peacekeeping operations, and operational support to the Somali Police Force.

Police Commissioner Kailie urged the officers to work towards fulfilling the AMISOM mandate and strive to impart best policing practices to their Somali Police counterparts.

Present were AMISOM Police Operations Coordinator, Daniel Ali Gwambal and the Special Assistant the AU Police Commissioner, Col. Mahamat Nouradine Idriss.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Lovelyn Obianuju, the Deputy Contingent Commander of the Nigeria FPU, noted that the training was beneficial and would enable them to deliver on the AMISOM mandate.

"The induction training is very useful. Every person who has been posted here should go through the training because it will enlighten and broaden their knowledge about the environment they will be working in,” she said.
