MOGADISHU, Somalia (Horn Observer) Somali police on Tuesday briefly detained two broadcast journalists in Mogadishu's KM area amid their journalists duty, local media and journalists reported,
Journalists said that they were released after officials from the Somalia’s Ministry of information intervened and have their footage deleted in exchange for their freedom around 13:00pm local time.
Sources from the Mustaqbal Radio said that the management agreed the footage be deleted in exchange for the freedom of their employees.
Somalia government has been using recently tactics to oppress the local media and journalists while blocking access to reporting issues that are of public interest.
This week, the Somali intelligence and Security agency (NISA) arrested again editor of Radio Hiigsi Mohamed Abdiwahab Nuur (better known as Abuuja), following a critical editorial piece about Somali security agencies. Family members and management of Radio Hiigsi said that the journalist is now being held in incommunicado and was severely tortured inside the notirous Godka Jilacow prison.
The father of the journalist Abdiawahab Nuur who spoke to Radio Kulmiye, an independent and popular radio station in Mogadishu said that the NISA is planning to charge his son with fake charges as punishment for his article on the security services and accused NISA for using powers and requested the federal government of Somalia to have his son justice served.
Many analysts say that the government is planning to silence the media through intimidation and fake charges out of the press freedom cycle to avoid international condemnation.

The journalists, Mahad Hassan Abdi and Shukri Hussein Sabriye, a cameraman and producer, who were working a privately owned Mustaqbal Radio, were detained for almost an hour around 12:00pm local time and were forced to stand on the sun burning noon for punishment while filming a local domestic market in Mogadishu’s KM4 area.
