Initial investigation on the downing of #AfricanExpress plane in #Bardale #Somalia on Monday shows that #Ethiopian forces who were on training exercise shot the plane.
MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) The Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, Mr. Adam Abdelmoula has said he was deeply saddened by the crash of plane carrying humanitarian cargo in Bardale on Monday.

In a statement, Abdelmoula said he was informed that a commercial plane carrying humanitarian cargo for an international nongovernmental organisation crashed killing six persons on board.

The plane was on approach to Bardale, approximately 55 km northwest of Baidoa town in South West State, when a rocket-propelled hit the plane around 15hours local time on Monday. Initial reports indicate that Ethiopian Forces in the town who were on training exercise shot the aircraft resulting it to crash at it was descending to land at the local airstrip.


"I am deeply saddened and troubled by this unfortunate incident. Too often, the women and men who risk their lives and put the wellbeing of others before theirs to support humanitarian operations are not recognized for the contribution they make to aid Somalis in need," Abdelmoula said "Our thoughts are with their families and loved ones during this terrible time. They made the ultimate sacrifice, carrying out the noble task of helping others."

On Tuesday, Somali government said it would welcome all institutions and government looking forward to the investigations of the plane crash.
The plane, according to humanitarian sources, had ferried Covid-19 aid from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) meant to the communities in Bardale.

"As the UN family, we will do all we can to assist the federal and South West State authorities to understand the cause of this tragedy. We will continue to follow up on this important development," adds Mr. Abdelmoula.
