NAIROBI (HORN OBSERVER) - A SalaamAir chartered plane ferrying humanitarian aid was nearly downed in the southern Somalia town of Qansah-Dhere in Bay region on Monday after it was shot with DSHK machine gun, local security and witnesses said.

The plane which ferried medicines and medical equipment was on its approach to Qansah-Dhere airport when it was shot from unidentified location, according to a report by Somaliupdate News.

The town is controlled by the South West State forces and the non-African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) military. The militant group al-Shabaab controls the rural villages surrounding the town.

"The plane was preparing to land when several shits of DSHK was fired at it. The shots hit the plane. There were at least three holes. It did not land," Abdulkadir Mohamed, a witness in Qansah-Dhere said.

There were no human injuries reported.

The South West State authorities were not immediately available for comment. There is no any claim from the Ethiopian military and the al-Shabaab group regarding the shooting against the humanitarian plane.

The plane has, however, returned and landed safely at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu on Monday afternoon. Photos shared widely on social media showed holes on the plane as it landed in Mogadishu.

On May 4 the Ethiopian forces in Bardale town in Bay region shot down an African Express Airways plane one hour after it flew from Mogadishu. The plane ferried Covid-19 humanitarian assistance and was on approach to Bardale. All six crew died in the crash.

A Somali Federal Government-led investigation on the aftermath of the Bardale plane crash is still ongoing.
