MOGADISHU, JULY 13 (Horn Observer) Somali government official said onThursday that Somali and allied forces launched an overnight attack against militant strongholds in Southern Somalia.

"Somali troops and allied troops had carried out an overnight attack on bases located at the town of Kuunya Barrow.” Hussein Barre Mohamed, Barawe district commisioner told  in an interview to Mustaqbal radio - a radio station based in Mogadishu - on Thursday morning, "The Shabab bases in the area were destroyed and the allied troops returned safely.”

The Somali and allied forces - referring the  US troops stationed in Somalia -  used military helicopters in the attack, according to the Barawe district commissioner.

Kuunya Barrow is 90km outside the coastal town of Barawe in lower Shabelle region.

Shabab, a militant group affiliated to Alqaeda, whose bases said to have been attacked, did not comment on the incident. The group always spread their information through Andalus Radio, a radio station controlled by the group.

Highly trained Somali army members known as Danab supported by American military advisors had several times launched successful military operations against various militant hideouts in Southern Somalia.

The details of the attack are sketchy and it was not immediately clear the casualties of  both sides.
