NAIROBI (Horn Observer) - The United States government on Monday vehemently condemned attack on UPDF soldiers near Goleweyn that left 12 soldiers dead near Golweyn of Lower Shabelle.

The AU troops from Uganda were on a regular patrol to secure the Mogadishu-Barawe Main Supply Route, when they came under attack on Sunday. The ambush was immediately claimed the the Shabaab - a militant gtoup affiliated to Alqaeda.

"This attack was an assault not only on AMISOM forces but on the people whom they are working to protect.” US Mission to Somalia said in a statement, "The United States reaffirms our commitment to support the efforts of AMISOM, which is working with the Federal Government of Somalia, to build a secure, peaceful, and prosperous country.”

Meanwhile AMISOM condemned in the strongest terms acts of terrorism whose perpetrators’ sole aim is to spread anarchy and inflict suffering on the people of Somalia.

Preliminary media reports said that 39 AU soldiers from Uganda were killed in the attack as claimed by the Shabaab, although the group makes the casualties of such attacks too high.

However, AMISOM confirmed on Monday that 12 AMISOM soldiers from Uganda were killed on Sunday’s attack.

"12 gallant AMISOM soldiers lost their lives while seven others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.” The Mission said in a statement on Monday.

SRCC Madeira reiterates AMISOM’s continued commitment to the cause for peace in Somalia, and notes that such attacks will not derail efforts to rid Somalia of the blood thirsty terrorists.

"The African Union Mission appreciates and honours the heroes whose lives have been lost while pursuing peace and stability in Somalia. I extend my deepest condolences to the families of our fallen soldiers, the people and government of Uganda,” Ambassador Madeira stated. "Your sacrifice and commitment to the cause for peace in Somalia is recognised and most appreciated by our continental Organization and by every member state of the African Union and will never be in vain,” he added.
