    Somalia: Journalist is Freed after Spending 6 days in Garowe Jail

    GAROWE (Horn Observer) Puntland's Nugaal Region's first grade court freed on Saturday Omar Mohamed aka Omar Dheere on bail, after spending 6 days in jail without charges.

GAROWE (Horn Observer) Puntland's Nugaal Region's first grade court freed on Saturday Omar Mohamed aka Omar Dheere on bail, after spending 6 days in jail without charges.

The court acknowledged that there were no sufficient proof for the case to go to trail and instructed that Puntland officials behind the arrest of the journalist to deliver the court sufficient proof not later than the next 72 hours. according to statement released by Media Association for Puntland (MAP)

"I was forcefully taken by heavily armed police and wasn't informed on who and why I was arrested” Omar Mohamed told reporters in Garowe following his release, "For the days in prison I wasn't taken to court for trail and until now I still don’t know what my charges are!”

Omar Dheere was the editor in chief of Horseed Media and contributed to Somali Cable and Sahan Online. Omar was also the director of communications and advocacy of the Media Association for Puntland (MAP).

Omar thanked for all those who took part for his release as individual and organizations such as MAP, NUSOJ, CPJ and RSF.

"The release of Omar, a devoted MAP member, is a relief for the whole journalism community in Puntland and Somalia," Faisal Khalif, the chairman of MAP said, "We still remain concerned the fact that Omar is released on bail”

"We will continue to fight against the targeting and persecution of journalists and their Association members by the Puntland authorities and any other government branches that tries to gag critical voices and media independence in Puntland’’ Faisal added.

Puntland counter-terrorism police with directives from the Puntland President arrested Ahmed Ali Kilwe, July 02, 2017, on allegations of "posting articles impertinent'' to the Puntland President. Ahmed was held without charges for 12-days and was later released with no explanations.
