GAROWE, Somalia (Horn Observer) The Semi autonomous government of Puntland have on Wednesday announced that its siding with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates on the gulf crisis and called for the Federal Government of Somalia to reconsider its position.

"For quite some time, Puntland state had had a strategic partnership with both UAE and SA in areas os security, trade and key developmental projects.” Statement released by the Puntland presidency on Wednesday read, "More over its widely known that Somalia has historically enjoyed good relations with the people and the governments of the UAE and SA”

"Therefore, we believe our position is to clearly stand with our partners, namely Saudi Arabia and UAE and We urge the FGS to reconsider its position regarding the impending crisis which if not addressed properly  will have lasting and negative consequences for the people of Somalia” the statement added.

In the statement Puntland also condemned all state and non state actors that support terrorism - referring to the Qatar government - that is wreaking havoc in Somalia today and called for an end to the crisis that is now threatening the stability of the region.

Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates have been pressuring some regional authorities such as Puntland to use its influence to divert the neutral stance taken  by the Federal government of Somalia or face consequences.

In July, Puntland lawmakers passed a $ 336 Million joint venture  to develop and manage Bosaso port, following an agreement signed between Puntland government and the UAE owned DP world.

In another development, UAE founded over 2000 soldiers based in Puntland, who were trained by Eric Prince, the blackwater founder.  The army were primarily established as anti-piracy security forces.   Critics say that the presence of the heavily armed forces in Puntland controlled by UAE and multi-million project on the Bosaso port are some of of the main reasons pressuring the Puntland authorities to make such an statement.

Earlier, several lawmakers and senators from Puntland, among  Senator Abdirazak Osman Hasan "Jurile” the chairman of Foreign Affairs and investment senate committee  and senator Abdirahman Farole called for the the Federal government to reverse its recent decision to remain neutral on the Gulf crisis.
