MOGADISHU, Somalia (Horn Observer) Seven Somali militants were confirmed killed in a joint operation carried out by Somali troops in coordination with their international partners in in the town of Jilib in Middle Jubba region, officials said.

"Our security forces killed seven al-Shabaab militants, including a senior al-Shabaab leader responsible for multiple bombings in Mogadishu” Ministry of information said in an statement, "H.E. Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed (Farmajo), the President and his administration remain resolute in their commitment to eradicate al-Shabaab's ability to conduct senseless acts of violence and crimes against the people of Somalia, its East African neighbors, and the international community”

The Somali government did not identify the militants targeted in the attack.

The airstrike was carried out two days after former deputy Shabab commander and ex-spokesman, Sheikh Mukhtar Roobow Ali aka Abuu Mansuur said that he quit al-Shabaab, accusing Al shabab for not serving the Islam, an act which was welcomed by Somalia's international partners.

"The United States supports a Somali-led process of degrading al-Shabaab’s influence using a comprehensive approach, including through high-level defections, reconciliation, and improved governance and service delivery." The US Mission to Somalia said in a statement, "The United States encourages the Somali government to continue to create pathways for al-Shabaab members to reject terrorism and join efforts to build a peaceful and prosperous country for all Somalis"

Last week, Somalia government said that a coordinated airstrike against the militants killed a high level Shabab leader near Shashweyne, outskirt of Benadir region.
