CAJ Welcomes Release of Editor and Calls for Safety of Journalists in Somalia
The Congress of African Journalists (CAJ) has welcomed the release of Radio Hiigsi Editor Mohamed Abduwahab Nuur(Abuuja) from five-month detention by Somali National Intelligence (NIS) officers since March 7, 2020.
A military court ordered the release of the journalist on August 3, by ruling that the editor was not guilty of the charges against him, including treason, terrorism, and murder.
"We congratulate the Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) and the local media fraternity for putting up a spirited fight for the release of the editor and applaud the court for its landmark decision which serves the cause of press freedom in Somalia,” said the CAJ Interim President Alexandre Niyungeko.
Somalia is the deadliest country for journalists in Africa. Journalists have repeatedly been subjected to harassment, intimidation, and threats in the course of duty and a number of them have been killed.
Among the recent cases was that of journalist Abdifatah Abduqadir Sharif of Radio Danan who was shot in Mogadishu on Thursday 25 June by a police officer, while he was coming from work. He sustained injuries on the back of his head and was rushed to a hospital and admitted.
"CAJ calls on Somali authorities to protect the safety of journalists, respect press freedom and prosecute all reported cases of attacks against journalists,” added the president.
