Ethiopia will not recognise Somaliland as independent state, says Ethiopian official
ADDIS ABABA (HORN OBSERVER) - Ethiopia will not recognise Somaliland as independent state but a region in northern Somalia, Ethiopian official said.
In a statement, Ethiopian foreign Affairs spokesman Dina Mufti has dismissed claims that his government would deal with the region as free state.
"Somaliland is part of the union of Somalia. It is not recognised. The news that Ethiopia and other countries do recognise it is not true,” he said.
Mufti said his country is committed to respect Somalia’s sovereignty and it stands for the unity of Somalia.
"As a matter of respecting the unity and sovereignty of a country, we are treating Somalis as one. We support the restoration of stability there,” he affirmed.
Ethiopia has consulate in Hargeisa for years and used to have close relationship with the region during the reign of Tigre led government.
Somaliland which located in northern Somalia had declared secession in 1991 after Somalia’s government was toppled.
Despite relative peace in the region, Somaliland failed to secure international recognition with many of Somalia’s partners call on Somalia and Somaliland to resolve the differences through dialogue.
