Somalia to re-open schools next week ending months of restrictions

MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) The Federal Education Ministry of Somalia has green-lighted the resumption of schools in the country next week following almost three months of suspension over COVID-19 preventive measures.

Students are required to adhere to the health authorities' guidelines including social distancing, face masks, and gloves during the learning process.

MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) The Federal Education Ministry of Somalia has green-lighted the resumption of schools in the country next week following almost three months of suspension over COVID-19 preventive measures.

The Education Minister, Abdullahi Godah Barre announced the primary and secondary schools will be open from 15th August.

However, the minister said that students are required to adhere to the health authorities' guidelines including social distancing, face masks, and gloves during the learning process.

"We want to announce that schools will be open next week. However we have taken care of all the possible situations that can risk new infections during learning," said Minister Godah who spoke to the press during a press conference in the capital Mogadishu on Wednesday.

He said officials have put in place measures to curb the spread of the virus.

Somali Ministry of Health has recorded zero cases as of Tuesday this week signalling the country to be possibly free from the virus. This was the first time since the first case was reported in the country in April.

There are 3227 positive cases with 1728 recoveries and more than 93 fatalities recorded across the country since March 16 when the first case was detected.
