MOGADISHU, Somalia (Horn Observer) Senator Hussein Ali Haji Abdalla on Tuesday survived an assassination attempt after armed assailants fired at his car in Mogadishu's Hodan district, witnesses said.

Witnesses said that a car carrying armed assailants fired at the lawmaker’s car, wounding the driver and his niece.  Both were immediately to hospital and are currently recovering.

"Soon after I left my home, the attacker’s car drove speedily and fired at us.” Senator Hussein Ali Haji said, "My driver and niece were wounded in the attack and are currently recovering.”

The senator is member of the Upper House of the Federal parliament of Somalia and  hails from the Southwest administration.

No group claimed the responsibility of the attack. Shabab, which is affiliated to Alqaeda previously claimed similar attacks.  The group remains potential threats, despite losing large swaths of territories to the Somali and AU troops in Somalia.

However, security of Mogadishu has improved in recent months after the Somali government carried out operation to restore the security of the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
