Kenya threats total flight ban on Somalia
NAIROBI (HORN OBSERVER) - Kenya has threaten to ban all flights to Somalia including humanitarian and medical evacuation over what it termed misuse of humanitarian flights exempted from the ban.
The ministry reiterates that humanitarian flights must strictly be used for humanitarian purposes to avoid a possible declaration by the government of Kenya of a full lockdown on all flights," the letter reads in part.
Kenya said that its airspace with Somalia remains closed owing to severance of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
On 11th of this month, Kenya announced that it had ban flights to and from Somalia
a day after Somalia maintained that it had not lifted the ban on khat from Kenya.
The flight ban by Kenya came after $50,000 worth Khat destined to Mogadishu remained stranded at Jomo Kenyatta International Aiport following rejection by Somali authorities.
Since khan ban on Kenya was implemented, those involved in the supply chain of the stimulant moved their operations to Ethiopia.
Almost all of the planes ferrying Ethiopian khat from Dire Dawa are Kenyan registered air crafts.
In a letter dated 27th May seen by Horn Observer, Kenya foreign ministry accused diplomatic missions and international organizations of abusing the move to allow humanitarian deliveries to Somalia.
