MOGADISHU, Somalia (Horn Observer) Somali Media Association (SOMA), an employer's association with its membership exceeding over 30 media stations across Somalia except Somaliland said on Tuesday member media stations are on the frontline on the fight against COVID-19, amid the country recorded 2089 cases so far.

As of Tuesday, Somalia recorded 66 new cases making the total cases recorded so far 2089 and 79 deaths and 380 recoveries.

Supported by United Nations Development Program (UNDP) through the office of the office of the Somali Prime Minister, local media stations  took to the airwaves in conveying the awareness programs in everyone’s home, to contain the spread of the virus.


The programs aired by the local radio and television stations include, Somali language PSAs on the importance of handwashing, self distancing, avoiding public gatherings, among other messages  – which are best ways to fight COVID19.

"SOMA conducted UNDP supported COVID-19 Media awareness programs through the office of the Somali Prime Minister and I am glad that the  awareness campaign received positive feedback.” Mohamed Abdiwahab, SOMA Secretary General told Horn Observer.

The Somali Media Association (SOMA) established in 2013 is a network of media stations consisting of radios and televisions across Southern and central Somalia and Puntland, aiming to unite the power of the media to serve the community collectively.

In addition to the media awareness raising, all the media centers under SOMA have  program called Content Sharing program intended for the people in the cities across Somalia to receive and share the same information with the generous support from the International Media Support (IMS) and FOJO. IMS/FOJO also supports training, provision of equipment to SOMA members.

"Whenever an emergency situation arises, we will volunteer to offer participation in the response measures , and conduct outreach programs through our shared programs” Mr. Abduwahab added.
