President of the Puntland regional state of Somalia, Sa'id Abdullahi Deni, has called for a meeting between central government leaders and those of the country's regional states.
Speaking at the first anniversary of his election, Deni said Puntland hoped the country’s national and regional leaders will meet and address political disputes as well as challenges facing the country, adding that he was ready to host the talks.

Issues that need to be discussed include security, constitutional disagreements and resource sharing, the Puntland leader said.

"What Puntland is seeking is not a chance for photo ops but result-focused serious talks,” said Deni.

His comments came after the state rejected a national petroleum law approved by both houses of parliament, urging that Puntland was not consulted.

The central government and regional states have been feuding since September 2018, when a gathering of regional leaders in the southern city of Kismayo resolved to stop cooperating with Mogadishu. They accused the central government of interference in regional state affairs.

While the government has managed to subdue South West, Hirshabelle and Galmudug states, Puntland and Jubbaland remain a constant source of headache for President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed (Farmajo), who is accused of seeking to install loyalists in the country’s federal member states to help him win re-election in 2020.
