Mogadishu, Somalia (Horn Observer) Somalia affirmed its commitment to the Arab Peace initiative as an option for resolving the escalating Palestinian issue, The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Balal Osman, on May 11, released a statement to the effect of that, during a meeting of the Council of League of Arab States on the Israeli aggression against the occupied city of Jerusalem and its people.

In the statement, Somalia called on the international community to assume its responsibilities urgently to pressure Israel to stop all repeated Israeli led attacks against the Palestinian people; including the exercise of their religious rights and the establishment of their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.

The tensions between Israel and the Palestinians in the Middle East have caused alarm across the world, with leaders weighing in on the deadly conflict. The Israeli army has launched hundreds of airstrikes on the Gaza Strip this month, while Palestinians have launched more than 1,000 rockets in retaliation.

The escalation has resulted in at least 56 Palestinians in Gaza – including 14 children – and six Israelis die in a matter of days, and hundreds wounded, in the most intense flare-up since the seven-week 2014 Israeli war on Gaza as reported by Al Jazeera.

The attacks have drawn worldwide condemnation and need for an end to the attacks from world leaders. The chief prosecutor of The Hague-based International Criminal Court, Fatou Bensouda also voiced concern at the escalation of violence between Israel and the Palestinians and said "crimes” may have been committed.

In a tweet, the Hague-based court observed... "I note with great concern the escalation of violence in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as well as in and around Gaza, and the possible commission of crimes under the Rome Statute [which founded the ICC],” Fatou Bensouda observed.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned Israel and reiterated support for Palestinians. The pan-Islamic body based in the Saudi city of Jeddah said it "condemns in the strongest terms the repeated attacks by the Israeli occupation authorities against the Palestinian people,” in a statement released on Tuesday after an emergency session.
