Mogadishu—The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) on Wednesday feted senior police officers from Zambia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone for outstanding service to Somalia during their tour of duty.

The officers were decorated with medals in recognition of outstanding performance and contribution to operational efficiency and capacity building of the Somali Police Force, as part of AMISOM’s mandate of restoring peace and stability in Somalia.

AMISOM Police Commissioner, Augustine Kailie underscored the important role the officers had played in helping transform the Somali Police into a formidable force, capable of carrying out professional policing activities. AMISOM Police officers mentor, train, advise and help build the capacity of the Somali Police Force at various police stations in Mogadishu and the regional states.

"You’ve served the people of Somalia; you’ve contributed to peace in Somalia and now you are going home. I hope you learnt a lot, including mission experience. You acquired knowledge just like you shared knowledge with the Somali Police,” Commissioner Kailie said at the farewell ceremony.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Hamweene Mazuba John from Zambia was among the first officers to be deployed to Jowhar in HirShabele State where he spearheaded the police training program for HirShabelle State police. There were no state police officers for HirShabelle before his deployment.

Following an intensive police training program by AMISOM Police, with Hamweene as the lead trainer, HirShaballe has now more than 400 police officers, deployed to various towns and districts.

"We now have, including those under training, at least 600 trained police officers in HirShabelle who can protect VIPs, manage checkpoints, patrols and traffic as well as observe human rights,” Hamweene added.

During her tour of duty in Somalia, Inspector of Police (IP) Annmarrie Kamara, from Sierra Leone, worked with newly deployed officers, organizing induction courses and overseeing their day-to-day activities, in addition to mentoring and training activities.

"We have helped the Somali Police Force build their knowledge in executing their duties. We imparted them with knowledge on the importance of community policing and observing human rights,” Inspector Annmarrie said.
