MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) Amid an increasing police brutality in Somalia capital, Somali police shot dead a young woman on Wednesday night in an apparent targeted attack in Hodan district, family and eyewitnesses said.

Hamdi Abdullahi, a 23-years-old beauty therapist, was heading home from her beauty care shop at Maka al-Mukarama road on the evening of Wednesday 24th June, when a police officer at Warshadda Anaha checkpoint shot at her Bajaj (tuk tuk) taxi.

"She was hit by a bullet on the head. She died instantly at the scene. When we were called we found her body at the hospital," Mohamed Ali, a family member said.

"We don't know why she was killed," Mr. Ali adds.

Another family member and a schoolmate of Hamdi, Ahmed Kadiye has described the killing as a tragedy to the Somali nation.

"The murder of a young girl by a police officer is a tragedy and a curse on our nation," Mr. Kadiye said.

In another incident, a uniformed Somali police officer shot and wounded a young radio journalist in Mogadishu's Sey Biyano neighbourhood. The Radio Danan presenter, Abdifatah Abduqadir Sharif was shot one time on the head as he was going home from work aboard a tuk tuk taxi around 7:45pm local time on Thursday.

According to the family, the incident occurred at a police checkpoint.

"Abdifatah was returning home from work when the police man shot him. He has sustained a head injury with seven shrapnel because the officer fired an explosive-like bullet which made a loud blast. No other person was injured it is only Abdifatah. I don't know why he [the officer] targeted the journalist," Ahmed Abduqadir, the journalist's elder brother told Horn Observer.

Both officers who killed Hamdi and injured Abdifatah were not arrested.  Police spokesman said they were still investigating the incidents.
