MOGADISHU (Horn Observer) : Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo congratulated Kenyan elect President Uhuru Kenyatta on his re-election as the President of the Republic of Kenya for a second term, soon after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared.

Kenya’s president, Uhuru Kenyatta, has been re-elected for a second time, beating his rival and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga. The final tally put the incumbent president in the lead with over 54.2% of the vote compared to Odinga’s 44.7%—a margin of 1.4 million votes.

"President Kenyatta is not only a close friend and brother but also a development conscious and diligent leader.” President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo said in a statement, ""President Kenyatta and I share a common vision of peace, stability and economic growth for our two countries and the region as a whole”

"President Farmajo is confident that the re-election of President Kenyatta would foster further cooperation on bilateral and diplomatic relations between Somalia and Kenya.” The statement added.

Somalia has had strong economic and diplomatic ties with Kenya, which were further strengthened after President Farmajo made his maiden state visit to Nairobi in March this year.

Somalia  shares long border with Kenya. However Kenya is a member of the African Union Mission of Somalia (AMISOM) whose army is fighting against the Shabab inside Somalia.  Hundreds of Kenyan soldiers lost their lives in the mission.
