MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) Gunmen with the uniform of Somali military brutally killed six Quran teachers in Rage Elle district of Middle Shabelle region, about 100km (62 miles) north of the capital, Mogadishu on Thursday, local officials and residents said.

The incident was strongly condemned by the local community members, civil society and the regional authorities.

Hirshabelle Internal Security Minister, Mohamed Khaire said five men died on the spot while a sixth succumbed to injuries sustained from the gunshot.

"We are very saddened that armed men raided a civilian house where the Quran teachers were reciting Quran early on Thursday. Five were killed instantly while the sixth man died later," the minister added.

On Thursday, authorities in Hirshabelle state announced that a committee will be organised to carry out a full investigation into the matter to ascertain the motive of the perpetrators.  All of the perpetrators were not arrested.

"We are still waiting for the investigations. We have heard that they [attackers] were wearing the military uniform but all of these details will be known publicly once the investigation is initiated," the police commander in Bal'ad Hussein Moalim said.

According to one resident in Rage Elle, the gunmen entered a house where the six teachers gathered for their Quran recitation. They begun shooting all of them killing five on the spot and injuring a sixth who later passed awayd.

"All had AK-47 rifles and had Somali army uniforms. The town is under Somali army despite there had been previous attacks by al-Shabaab. I don't think these were al-Shabaab," said the resident who only agreed his initial Abdirahman to be used in this report for fear of his safety.

In late May, gunmen who were members of Somali military abducted and horrendously killed eight young health workers in Gololey village in Middle Shabelle region.  An investigation launched thereafter has not been concluded despite the army commanders denying involvement of the attack.
