MARKA (HORN OBSERVER) About 55 district administrators and officials from Marka town, the once most preferred holiday destination in southern Somalia have got their first training about city administration and service delivery with the support of TISPlus, a program funded by USAID with the aim of increasing Somalia's stability through participatory processes.

The five-day training provided basic administrative skills to the city administration officials from Marka, Bufow, Janale, Shalanbod, El-Jaalle and Golweyn — all within Lower Shabelle and are among the districts liberated from the militant group al-Shabaab. The training also focused on the benefits and practices of decentralising the local administrations.

"The most important thing we have learned is the decentralisation of the local administration. We also understood how important is the work of the Local Administration and that of the District Administration, and we also found out that we are all under the District Commissioner (DC). We give the DC daily reports for ease of the work," Nur Osman Raage, Shalandod Administrator said.

According to the Governor of Lower Shabelle, Ibrahim Adan Ali (Najah), the role of women in the local administration has been impressively applaudable.

"Women are core part of our society. They are also an important workforce in the government. For these reasons, promoting the participation of women in the training as decision-makers was a significant aim of the training," says the Governor Najah.

Aniso Heyle, one of the female administrators working in Marka District Administration noted how the training empowered her to develop skills of cooperation and good governance.

"This training was very informative and successful because first of all it was designed for us. As an administrator now, I am able to deliver better services for my community and for my city of Marka which was once the most preferred holiday destination in the southern Somalia," Mrs. Heyle adds.

At the end of the training, the local administrators were hosted by the Marka District Administration with a banquet to mark the successful conclusion of their training. The local administrators finally awarded a certificate of appreciation to Governor Najah to recognise his service of dedication to the population.
