NAIROBI (HORN OBSERVER) - Son of late Garissa County Senator and a hero who took part in the operation to rescue hostages in the middle of an attack on Westgate by Al-Shabaab in 2013, Abdikadir Yussuf Haji has won the senatorial seat vacated by his late father.
Yusuf Haji who was serving his second term had passed away last February at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, making the seat vacant, ready for the by-election.
The Garissa senatorial by-election was scheduled for Tuesday, May 18
Haji received the endorsement of the Abduwak, Aulihan and Abdalla clans, which recommended that he should succeed his father as a senator.
Kenya’s Electoral Commission on Thursday announced Haji as the winner after no other candidate submitted nomination papers as the registration was to Wednesday’s deadline (March 31)
"After receiving the nomination papers from only one aspirant, I have forwarded the information to IEBC headquarters for the commission to make a determination,” Garissa County IEBC Returning Officer Hussein Gure told local media.
Haji gained fame during the 2013 Westgate attack in Nairobi when he braved his way into the mall and managed to rescue several people who were trapped in the building as Al-Shabaab militants laid siege.
