MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) - Armed fighters loyal to Somali opposition took over many parts of the capital after a day of fierce gunfight with pro-outgoing president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.

The fighting pro-opposition army erupted at several junctions including Fagah, San’a and later spread to Mirinayo neighborhood on the seaside of the capital.

Later in the evening spilled over various areas such as K4, Dabka, Waberi police station and Tarabunka and Taleh in Hodan.

The casualties of the ongoing clashes are yet sketchy despite dosens of people including fighting sides are feared dead.

Former president Hassan Sheikh Mohamed and Wadajir Party chairman- both opposition figures said their homes were attacked by the government forces.

Speaking to the state-owned media, Minister for Internal Security Hassan Hundubey called for calmness and vowed to continue the fight.

"Our forces have been attacked by armed militia. We defended our positions,” he added.

Mistrust has now emerged with Somali National Army as clan line divisions became wider due to the heated politicized military operations. Security sources confirmed to Horn Observer that two armored vehicles defected to the opposition as war broke out on Sunday.
