MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) - Former police commissioner, Bashir Mohamed Jama (Gobe) has been appointed as the country's state minister for Public Works barely two days after Somali prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble and President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo agreed to bury hatchet following months-long rift that plunged the country into political crisis.

In a statement, Roble directed Gobe to lead the ministry barely a month after Gobe was assigned to lead the spy agency of the horn of African nation.

The appointment of Gobe follows a deal by Farmaajo and Roble to speed up the process for long-delayed elections.

"The leadership have agreed to accelerate the election process by calling on the federal member states to start the election of the [lower house of] parliament in the next couple of weeks,” a statement by the two leaders said late on Thursday.

The two leaders had each appointed a different candidate to replace the head of the agency, who was suspended last month after an agent went missing.

Roble had replaced Fahad Yasin who was then head of National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) with Gobe after public uproar over the death of Ikran Farah Tahlil, a move rejected by Farmaajo.

At the same time, Yasin Abdullahi Mohamud alias Farey, appointed by Farmaajo as the chief of the spy agency NISA to replace its former head Fahad Yasin Haji Dahir.

According to the government spokesperson, Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimu, the two sides agreed on several thorny issues, including the legitimacy of Abdullahi Mohamed Nur, whose nomination by PM Roble as Internal Security minister was rejected by Farmaajo.

The two also agreed Yasin Farey to take charge at the agency while Gobe was to be appointed as a state minister.

"Yasin Abdullahi Mohamud alias Farey will stay as acting NISA director until a person is officially appointed,” Moalimu noted.

Farmaajo and Roble also accepted the case of Ikran Tahlil Farah, a female NIA agent who went missing in June to run its course through the military court as the two leaders directed the security agencies to cooperate with SNA court on the case.

Both Farmajo and Roble apologized to the public for the political crisis caused by the disagreement between the leaders.
