MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) – The United Nations in Somalia has issued a strong condemnation following a deadly mortar attack on the Aden Adde International Airport area, where the UN Compound is situated.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday night, resulted in the tragic death of a member of the UN Guard Unit.

Expressing solidarity, Catriona Laing, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, emphasized the crucial role played by the UN Guard Unit in ensuring the safety and security of UN personnel engaged in supporting peace- and state-building in Somalia.

Laing stated, "We condemn this act of violence, and our thoughts are with the family and colleagues of the victim during this difficult time.”

Several mortar rounds, claimed to be orchestrated by the militant group Al-Shabaab, struck the Aden Adde International Airport area, causing not only the loss of a UN Guard Unit member but also damaging infrastructure in the vicinity.

The UN in Somalia has called for swift justice against those responsible for the attack.

Despite the adversity, the UN reaffirms its commitment to supporting the people and government of Somalia in their ongoing endeavors to establish peace and stability in the country.
