ADDIS ABABA (HORN OBSERVER) – Ethiopia's parliament has greenlit a series of high-profile appointments, marking a notable shift in the country's leadership landscape.

Ethiopia's National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) Director General Temesgen Tiruneh Dinku (right pctured) has been appointed as the new deputy prime minister, while former UN ambassador Taye Atske Selassie (left pictured) stepping in as the new foreign minister.

ADDIS ABABA (HORN OBSERVER) – Ethiopia's parliament has greenlit a series of high-profile appointments, marking a notable shift in the country's leadership landscape.

National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) Director General Temesgen Tiruneh Dinku has been appointed as the new deputy prime minister, succeeding Demeke Mekonnen, who held the position for over a decade.

This move comes as part of a broader reshuffling, with former UN ambassador Taye Atske Selassie stepping in as the new foreign minister, taking over from Mekonnen who has held the role since 2020.

Temesgen Tiruneh Dinku, known for his role in coordinating government responses to the Amhara region conflict, recently ascended to the position of vice president within Prime Minister Abiy’s Prosperity Party.

Redwan Hussein (left), previously serving as the National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister, has been appointed as the new Director General of NISS, and Tigist Hamid (right) as the new Director-General of INSA.

With this latest appointment, he assumes a pivotal role in the country’s leadership.

Moreover, Ambassador Redwan Hussein, previously serving as the National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister, has been appointed as the new Director General of NISS, succeeding Temesgen Tiruneh.

Concurrently, Tigist Hamid, formerly the Deputy Director-General of INSA, steps into the role of Director General, replacing Solomn Soka.

These changes unfold against a backdrop of escalating security and humanitarian crises within Ethiopia, casting a spotlight on the challenges facing Abiy Ahmed’s government.

Additionally, tensions persist between Ethiopia and Somalia over issues such as the Somaliland MOU on military base establishment and Red Sea access, adding another layer of complexity to the regional dynamics.
