GAROWE, Somalia (HORN OBSERVER) - Despite facing limited training, scarce resources, challenging working conditions, and low pay, Puntland's journalists were praised with their comprehensive election coverage, including reporting from remote areas to inform the election officials and educate the public.

Their efforts were crucial for ensuring transparency, delivering timely and accurate information, and representing the electorate.

This was especially significant for Puntland's emerging democracy, which has now seen all 36 districts elect local governments, making it the first region in Somalia to conduct democratic elections. In contrast, Somaliland, which has been holding direct votes since 2002, declared independence from the rest of Somalia.

The media's role has been widely praised, with special commendation for women journalists who played a key part in local coverage.

This video documentary, produced by SJS, highlights the contributions of Puntland's journalists, including women, and their impact during the election.
