Streets remain empty in Beledweyne city, Hiiraan region, as rival forces fight for control of the key regional offices on Friday.

BELEDWEYNE, Somalia (KAAB TV) – Further details are emerging about a battle early on Friday in the city of Beledweyne, the capital of the Hiiraan region.

The clashes, which involved forces aligned with the Hirshabelle and Hiiraan State administrations, erupted after the Hirshabelle-aligned troops launched an attack on the Hiiraan State forces in control of the Hiiraan regional administration offices.

The two rival groups fought in the city centre where the regional administration offices and the Lamagalaay camp in Beledweyne are located.

Confirmed reports indicate that one soldier and one civilian were injured in the fighting that took place inside Beledweyne this morning.

On the other hand, the Hiiraan State administration claimed victories in the early morning attack launched by Hirshabelle-aligned forces, stating that their objective was to disrupt a celebration marking the anniversary of Hiiraan State, which is set for tomorrow.

Elders and prominent figures have been busy to stop the armed clashes and separate the two warring factions.

The situation remains calm according to Kaab TV journalist.

However, there is always a possibility of renewed conflict between the two sides since the areas they occupy are not far apart.

Security officials in Beledweyne have yet to comment on the battle that the city’s residents woke up to this morning.
