MOGADISHU, Somalia (Horn Observer/ Diplomat News Network) Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of Somalia, on Thursday hosted Jenny Chapman, the United Kingdom's Minister of State for International Development and Africa at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, for high-level talks aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation on security, governance and economic development.

The meeting in Mogadishu focused on consolidating joint counterterrorism efforts, accelerating institutional reforms and expanding development partnerships, according to a statement from Villa Somalia.

Both sides reviewed ongoing security operations against extremist groups, progress in federal state-building and international support frameworks aligned with Somalia’s national priorities. President Mohamud briefed the visiting delegation on stabilization initiatives in recently recovered territories and reforms designed to strengthen the capacity and accountability of Somalia’s security institutions.

The leaders also discussed further enhancing the strong and enduring partnership between Somalia and the United Kingdom. President Mohamud expressed appreciation for the UK’s continued cooperation and support for Somalia’s state-building efforts and climate resilience programs, underscoring what he described as steady progress toward democratic transformation.

On her first official trip to Somalia, Jenny Chapman announced £6 million in fresh humanitarian aid for people affected by severe drought, and visited operations supported by the UK, including the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) and the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

Chapman reaffirmed Britain’s long-term commitment to Somalia’s stability and development, emphasizing continued UK backing for governance reform, counter-extremism initiatives and humanitarian assistance. She noted that sustained progress in Somalia carries broader implications for security and economic resilience across the Horn of Africa, according to Diplomat News Network

The United Kingdom remains one of Somalia’s principal bilateral partners, providing technical, financial and institutional support. Analysts say the latest engagement signals a shared determination to safeguard recent security gains while advancing democratic governance and sustainable economic growth
