Mogadishu, Somalia (Horn Observer) Somalia has officially launched the Somali Cyber security Emergency Response Center (SOMCIRT), the country's first national center dedicated to coordinating the prevention, detection, and response to cyber security incidents, Officials said.

Operating under the National Telecommunications Authority,SOMCIRT will serve as the national hub for cyber security incident response. Its responsibilities include receiving and analyzing reports of cyber incidents, issuing threat alerts and advisories, coordinating responses to cyber threats, and promoting cyber security awareness and cooperation among government institutions, the private sector, and international partners.

The creation of the center followed extensive national consultations and technical assessments aimed at improving the country’s capacity to address cyber threats, According to Mustafa Yasin Sheikh, Director General of the National Telecommunications Authority.

"The establishment of SOMCIRT is the result of extensive national consultations and technical assessments to strengthen Somalia’s ability to respond to cyber threats and protect critical digital infrastructure,” Mustafa Yasin Sheikh, Director General of the National Telecommunications Authority said.

Inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Somalia, Hamza Abdi Barre, in a ceremony held in Mogadishu. The establishment of SOMCIRT represents a significant milestone in Somalia’s efforts to strengthen national cyber security and safeguard its rapidly expanding digital infrastructure.

During the launch ceremony, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre described the new center as a crucial step in supporting Somalia’s broader digital transformation and national security objectives.

"The launch of SOMCIRT marks a major step toward securing Somalia’s digital future. A secure cyber environment is essential for national security, economic development, and public trust in digital services,” the Prime Minister said.

Cyber security has become increasingly important as Somalia continues to expand digital services, internet access, and technology-driven government services.

"As digital services expand across Somalia, strengthening cyber security systems is essential to protect government institutions, telecommunications infrastructure, and other critical sectors,” the Minister of Communications and Technology, Mohamed Hassan Mohamed said, "SOMCIRT will play a key role in ensuring that the country’s digital systems remain secure and resilient.”

The center is expected to play an important role in strengthening Somalia’s resilience against cyber threats and protecting the country’s critical digital infrastructure as connectivity and digital services continue to grow.
