
US commends Somali Prime Minister and the Federal Member State leaders for rejecting a mandate extension – statement
Somali Prime minister Mohamed Hussein Rooble and three other federal member states Hirshabelle, Southwest and Galmudug rejected the April 12 mandate extension, which plunged the country into potential political and security crisis.
"We urge Somalia’s national and Federal Member State leaders to meet immediately to finalize a consensus-based electoral model and hold parliamentary and presidential elections as soon as possible on the basis of the September 17 agreement. All leaders must set aside their political aspirations and differences for the good of the Somali people and negotiate in good faith without preconditions and with a willingness to compromise.” US department of State’s press release read in part.
On Wednesday evening, Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Rooble met with the leaders of Hirshabelle, Galmudug and the council of the presidential candidates in a bit to bring them into negotiating table.
"The aim of the meeting was based on how to strengthen and work together the security around the capital and stop all sorts of violence and allow displaced people to return to their homes” Abdirahman Alcadaala, deputy information minister said, "The meeting also discussed holding elections based on 17 September agreement”
The statement further called on Somalia’s security forces and all armed groups to stand down and allow political dialogue to resume in an atmosphere free from violence and intimidation. Continuing conflict will only serve to worsen conditions for the people of Somalia.
In a separate statement, IGAD welcomed he Somali leaders consensus to proscribe extension of mandate of the Executive and Parliament. IGAD reiterates the centrality of constructive and inclusive dialogue as an essential prerequisite for comprehensive settlement of all outstanding issues. IGAD strongly urges all Somali leaders to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from any actions that will lead to further escalation of violence. All parties should ensure protection of lives, properties and civilian institutions.
United Nations (UN) has estimated that between 60,000 and 100,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in Mogadishu following an outbreak of violence last Sunday.
In a statement, UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia the displaced include vulnerable internally displaced persons who had sought refuge in the Somali capital but have again fled to find refuge at the outskirts of the city.
