UN in Somalia is appalled by the deadly attack on Afrik Hotel in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) The United Nations in Somalia strongly has condemned the deadly terrorist attack on Hotel Afrik on Sunday.

MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) The United Nations in Somalia strongly has condemned the deadly terrorist attack on Hotel Afrik on Sunday.

"We At least 10 people -including civilians and officials- were killed and about a dozen others were injured in the attack which started late on the afternoon and continued until mid-night. About four heavily armed men stormed the hotel's high walls shortly after a suicide car bombing ripped off the backyard wall of the popular hotel.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen engaged in an hours-long siege before being dislodged by the Somali security forces.

In a press statement, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) termed the attack as "reprehensible and senseless attack one on a place frequented by innocent civilians".

'We are appalled by this reprehensible and senseless attack on a venue frequented by innocent civilians, and condemn it in the strongest terms,” the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, James Swan, said.

The United Nations in Somalia expresses its condolences to the families of the victims, and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured.

The al-Qaeda-allied terror group Al-Shabaab claimed the responsibility of the attack.

Somali government condemned the attack and called for a joint efforts to contain the menace of terrorist groups.
