Somali forces kill two al-Shabaab operatives
MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) - At least two al-Shabaab operatives were Monday killed following a security operation by Somali forces in the southwest of the country barely two days after over 100 people were killed in clashes between Somali military and al-Shabaab militants in the Lower Shabelle region.
Speaking to the media, Qansah-dhere assistant district commissioner, Mukhtar Abdi said the two who were suspected to have been planting IED on a roadside were being killed by the forces.
"Following a tip-off by the public, the security forces in the district conducted operation against two militants who wanted to harm the public. The militants were killed and an IED buried on the roadside was detonated,” Abdi said.
The operation comes two days after heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters stormed two Somali military bases in the Lower Shabelle region, prompting hours-long fierce fighting.
In a statement, the Somali military claimed to have killed more than 85 al-Shabab fighters and wounded ten others during the simultaneous attacks on Barrie and Awdhegle bases.
The militant group, however, on their side, claimed that its fighters killed 47 government soldiers and made away with huge cache of weapons and military vehicles.
Al-Shabaab has been fighting Somali forces backed by African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) for the past decade.
The group which once controlled large swath territories in the south and central Somalia lost many towns including the capital to the Somali army following deadly clashes.
