    GALKAYO (HORN OBSERVER) - At least twenty were on Sunday killed and more than thirty others injured after al-Shabaab attacked a military base in Somalia's central region.

GALKAYO (HORN OBSERVER) - At least twenty were on Sunday killed and more than thirty others injured after al-Shabaab attacked a military base in Somalia's central region.

According to officials and witnesses, Al-Shabaab used a Vehicle Borne Improvised Device (VBIED) to breach the gate of the base before heavily armed fighters engaged the soldiers.

"At around 4:30 am, as the soldiers were preparing for the morning prayers, al-Shabaab ambushed them and started with an explosion," Major Mohamed Mire Mohamud, deputy police chief of Galmudug said, claiming "But they suffered casualties."

In a statement posted on its affiliate media, al-Shabaab claimed to have killed more than 34 soldiers in the attack.


Wisil is a small town located in northwest of the port town of Hobyo town, which is approximately 857 kilometers (532 miles) from Mogadishu.

Attack comes amid intensified operations against al-Shabaab fighters in central and southern Somalia.

The military claimed that its forces killed more than 200 fighters in series of operations in Middle and Lower Shabelle regions.

Somali backed by African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) had recaptured several towns including Somali capital following fierce clashes with Al-Shabaab fighters.

Al-Shabaab currently controls villages and small towns in central and southern of the country.
