MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) - Somalia's deputy prime minister, Mahdi Mohamed Guleid and senate speaker, Abdi Hashi have separately appointed parallel leaders of members of the electoral teams for Somaliland state ahead of the country's parliamentary and presidential election.

An election team comprising nine members including three from the office of PM Roble who loyal to Guled has elected Mr Khadar Harir Hussein as chairman and Najib Hussein Samale as deputy.

Hours later, another six members poll team previously appointed to the State Indirect Electoral Implementation Team (SIEIT) had elected their own chairperson, Sulayman Aidid Osman, and Abdishakur Abib Hayir as deputy.

Somaliland’s SIEIT is required to have only a chairperson and his deputy to lead the process to select senate and lower house members from the breakaway Somaliland.

The difference between Guled and Hashi has been dragging since last year when the two disputed over who appoints the poll team for Somaliland.

In additional, the two factions differed over the polling centre with those on the side of Guled demanding elections to be conducted at the police academy while the other group wants the poll to take place at the Airforce Hangar in Afisioni.

"The election of the north westerners (from Somaliland) is not complete until it’s decided on where to hold the elections and the (common) leadership of the SIEIT,” Professor Abdi Ismail Samatar, an academic who teaches in USA and South Africa, told the local media.
