GURIEL (HORN OBSERVER) - A relative calm returned to Guriel town following more than 20-hour deadly fighting between Somali forces and Ahlu Sunna forces over the control of central Somali in Galdaduud region.

Somalia’s state-owned media, SONNA reported mid-morning that Galmudug government and military officials had extended an olive branch to the Ahlu Sunna forces to vacate the town and cart away bodies of their fighters who were killed in the fighting on Saturday.

Sonna added that Ahlu Sunna political leader Sheikh Shakir was also ordered to leave Guriel by 6pm local time.

At least 30 people, the majority of them soldiers and military officials, were killed while close to 50 others were injured in the fierce fighting between the sides.

Among the top commander in killed in the fighting is US-trained elite force commander Abdilatif Ahmed Ulusow aka Feyfle who is Danab commander in charge of Galmudug state.

Abdiladif was one of the original members of ASWJ but later renounced the group and joined the government forces.

Ahlu Sunna also mobilised local religious leaders and madrasa teachers to fight alongside them in the battle which lasted the whole day on Saturday.

Early Sunday, heavy fighting broke out between the government forces and Ahlusunna fighters which lasted for hours before it lulled.
