Mogadishu, Somalia (Horn Observer) Al-Shabaab officials and several traditional elders from Somalia's Hawadle clan have reportedly reached an agreement to end hostilities in parts of Hiiraan region.

A 16-point joint statement circulated by Al-Shabaab-affiliated media  said the sides had resolved their disputes and agreed to maintain peace in areas controlled or influenced by the clan.

The reported agreement includes a commitment by Hawadle elders not to allow the recruitment or operation of Macawiisley fighters in their areas or provide them with shelter. Macawiisley forces from Hiiraan have played a key role in supporting Somali government troops against Al-Shabaab.

The meeting in Maxaas was attended by dozens of traditional elders, while Al-Shabaab was represented by senior figures including Hussein Ali Fidow, Hassan Yacqub Ali and Mohamed Abu Abdalla.

The agreement comes amid growing political tensions in Hiiraan following President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s support for Hirshabelle President Ali Gudlawe’s bid for another term.

Local Hawadle leaders had opposed Gudlawe’s candidacy, accusing the federal government of violating a power-sharing arrangement between Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle.

The reported deal has raised concerns that it could weaken the anti-Al-Shabaab mobilization that began in Hiiraan in 2022 and involved local Macawiisley fighters working alongside government forces.
