Mogadishu, Somalia – The National Communications Authority (NCA) of Somalia and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) have jointly organized a workshop to develop an Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) strategy for Somalia.

The two-day workshop brought together a diverse group of stakeholders from the public and private sectors, including government officials, network operators, academia, and civil society organizations.

The workshop’s main objective is to develop a comprehensive and coherent IPv6 strategy that will enable Somalia to fully transition from the current IPv4 to IPv6. The IPv6 protocol is essential for the continued growth and development of the Internet, as it provides a much larger pool of available IP addresses and better security features.

During the workshop, participants will review the current status of IPv6 adoption in Somalia, identify challenges and opportunities, and develop a roadmap for implementing IPv6 in the country. The workshop will also provide a platform for participants to share experiences and best practices from other countries that have successfully transitioned to IPv6.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the General Manager of the NCA, Mr. Mustafa Yasin emphasized the importance of IPv6 for the future of Somalia’s digital economy. He also thanked the ITU for supporting the workshop and providing technical expertise. He noted that the adoption of IPV6 would enable the country to keep pace with technological advancements and global trends and would help to enhance the quality and accessibility of Internet services throughout the country.

The Director of the ITU’s Arab Region, Adel Darwish, also addressed the participants, highlighting the importance of collaboration and coordination among all stakeholders in developing the IPv6 strategy.

The outcome of the workshop – moderated by Dr. Navaneethan Arjuman, an expert in IPv6 technologies – will be a roadmap for implementing IPv6 in Somalia, which will be presented to the relevant stakeholders for further consultation and adoption.
