MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) – The appointment of Jubbaland State of Somalia's 'envoy' to Kenya by President Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Ahmed Madobe) has elicited strong reactions from various quarters.

In a presidential decree issued on Friday by the Jubbaland state, Sadik Abdullahi Bogale was designated as the Jubbaland envoy to Kenya.

The decree stated, "The President of the Government of Jubaland has appointed Mr. Sadik Abdullahi Bogale as the envoy of the Government of Jubaland to Kenya,” and further noted, "This appointment will come into effect when the President signs it, and he signed it.”

The Somali federal government maintains its own ambassador to Nairobi, while Somaliland, which asserts its independence from the rest of Somalia, operates a political mission in Kenya.

However, Kenya has established close and robust ties with the regional state of Jubbaland since 2013 when Jubbaland was formed, providing substantial security support in its fight against Al-Shabaab.

The public has responded to Madobe’s move in diverse ways. Some view it as a sign that the Jubbaland administration under Ahmed Madobe is asserting its independence from the federal government, potentially indicating friction between Mogadishu and Kismayo.

Conversely, others have voiced concerns over what they perceive as an illegal appointment, contrary to the federal constitution.

President Ahmed Madobe, who recently extended his term in office in August, faces significant opposition from political rivals who advocate for his departure and the commencement of regional elections.

Despite being in office for the past 11 years, Madobe has hinted at his intention to run for a third term.

As of now, the Federal Government of Mogadishu has not issued an official statement regarding the appointment of the Jubbaland envoy to Kenya.
