MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) – A pregnant woman and her two young children lost their lives, while at least seven others, including children, sustained injuries when mortar shells rained down on civilian-populated neighborhoods in parts of Mogadishu, Somalia's capital on Sunday.

The districts of Wadajir and Kaxda, situated on the western fringes of the capital, bore the brunt of the attack.

A devastated neighbor of the affected family recounted the harrowing moment when tragedy struck.

The mortar round struck their bedroom in Wadajir district, where the woman and her children had been peacefully sleeping.

"It was early morning, and we were still asleep when we heard the deafening explosion. When we rushed to check, we found our neighbor, the woman, and her children tragically killed,” lamented Abdi Mohamud, the grief-stricken neighbor.

Meanwhile, reports from Kahda district told of several individuals injured after multiple rounds of mortar shelling pounded the area.

Among the casualties were students from a Quran school, where at least two children sustained shrapnel wounds, as recounted by residents in Wadajir.

Residents captured the aftermath of the attack through photos, showcasing the damage inflicted upon residential buildings by the relentless shelling.

The grim reality of attacks on civilian-populated areas has regrettably become all too familiar in Mogadishu. The extremist group Al Shabaab frequently claims responsibility for mortar attacks targeting the city, resulting in the tragic loss of innocent civilian lives.

As the city grapples with this latest tragedy, the local police in Mogadishu have yet to issue an official statement regarding the attacks that unfolded on that fateful morning.

These distressing events come in the wake of a horrifying suicide explosion near an internally displaced camp located in close proximity to the Parliament building, an incident that claimed the lives of 11 individuals just two days prior, casting a dark shadow over the city.
