MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is showing reluctance to extradite his son, Mohamed Hassan Sheikh, to Turkey for trial in connection with a fatal accident in Istanbul late November, an official at the Somali Foreign Affairs Ministry said.

The incident involved Mohamed driving a Somali consulate vehicle, resulting in the tragic death of motorcycle courier Yunus Emre Göçer on November 30. He then fled the country.

Currently, Mohamed is suspected to be seeking refuge within the presidential palace in Mogadishu.

The official at the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs, speaking on condition of anonymity, said "The president is hesitant because the son’s mother, one of the president’s two wives, has apparently influenced him not to send the son to Turkey, as he might face imprisonment,” the official disclosed.

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has filed an indictment against Mohamed Hassan Sheikh, seeking a potential prison term of up to six years for the charge of "causing death by negligence” in the accident, the Turkish media reported on Tuesday.

The completed investigation points to Mohamed’s primary fault in the incident, according to a two-page indictment submitted to the criminal court of first instance.

The Forensic Medicine report emphasizes Mahmud’s culpability, positioning Göçer at a secondary level of fault.

Despite a video circulating online showing President Mohamud assuring a family member of the deceased that "everything will go in the right direction,” Villa Somalia declined to comment on this pressing matter.

Meanwhile, in Ankara, Turkish Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç expressed the expectation that Mohamed Hassan Sheikh would soon come from abroad to provide his statement.
