MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) – A mother of four lost her life, and an undisclosed number of individuals sustained injuries when a residential house in Boondheere district was hit by mortar shelling on Wednesday.

The residential area, situated in close proximity to the presidential palace, Villa Somalia, was left in mourning as residents aw firsthand of the harrowing sight of the woman’s mutilated body within her home.

According to police sources, the mortar shelling targeted the area where civilians reside, raising suspicions that the presidential palace might have been the intended destination.

Several rounds of the mortar attack also struck Wardhigley area on Wednesday morning, though authorities did not disclose any information regarding casualties.

No arrests have been made in connection to the attack, leaving the community grappling with uncertainty and fear.

This tragic event is reminiscent of past similar attacks orchestrated by Al-Shabaab.

The incident occurred shortly after the recent handover of security responsibilities for the presidential palace and the parliament seat from the peacekeepers of the African Union Transition Mission (ATMIS) to Somalis last week.

The security transition involved recently trained officers, predominantly composed of Hawiye clan forces, taking charge of safeguarding these crucial installations.

As the residents of Boondheere mourn the loss of an innocent life, questions arise about the ongoing security challenges faced by the Mogadishu authorities in the wake of this transfer of responsibility.
