Somalia rebukes IGAD, demands apology over alleged bias towards Ethiopia
MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) – The Somali government strongly condemns the statement from the Executive Secretary of IGAD, accusing it of favoring the Ethiopian Government and demanding an immediate apology and withdrawal of the statement.
The Somali foreign ministry stated, "We call on the Executive Secretary to immediately apologize, withdraw the statement and take appropriate action.”
The Executive Secretary of IGAD, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, issued a statement on Wednesday expressing deep concern about recent developments in relations between the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) and the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS).
The statement did not reference the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Somaliland and Ethiopia, which Somalia has deemed illegitimate and a violation of its territorial integrity.
IGAD is actively monitoring the situation, recognizing the potential implications for regional stability.
In light of the circumstances, the Executive Secretary is urging IGAD leaders to take decisive action and appealing to the two sisterly countries to collaborate towards a peaceful and amicable resolution, emphasizing the shared values that unite the IGAD family.
