MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) - General Abdullahi Ali Caanood, the spokesperson for the Somali Ministry of Defense, expressed concerns over the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Ethiopia and Somaliland, citing it as a catalyst for insurgency-like activities within Somaliland and Ethiopia.

In a Thursday interview with a local Somali television station in Mogadishu, General Caanood revealed that they had engaged with out-of-service ex-soldiers in Hargeisa, Burco, and Awdal in Somaliland.

These ex-soldiers, he claimed, "are prepared to take up arms against President Muse Bihi and resist the MOU signed with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali."

Additionally, General Caanood reported calls he made with ex-Somali army members in Jigjiga, who were former soldiers of the Somalia military regime. Despite Jigjiga being under the Somali region of Ethiopia, he asserted their readiness to engage in insurgence war against Addis Ababa. The details of launching a Somali insurgency in Jigjiga were not specified.

Addressing the strength of the current Somali army, General Caanood asserted, "We are not going to wait. We can also start with one brigade." He disclosed reaching out to ex-Somali forces in the diaspora, urging them to return and fight for their homeland.

Without presenting evidence, General Caanood alleged that the Ethiopia-Somaliland MOU involved territorial seizure, calling on fellow Somalis to join a new war for liberation against Ethiopia.

Contrary to this claim, the MOU between Somaliland and Ethiopia, as officially declared, entails the lease of a 20-kilometer coastal area for a 50-year period, with Somaliland anticipating international recognition through the agreement, according to statements by Somaliland and Ethiopian officials.

Somalia on ts side has declared the MOU as "illegitimate".

It is noteworthy that General Caanood's brother, Sheikh Mustafa Ali Caanood, was recently detained after declaring a jihad war on Sufi clerics in Mogadishu.

The sentiments of jihad and violence against Ethiopia and Somaliland have intensified since the signing of the MOU on Monday in Addis Ababa.

The awareness of General Caanood's comments on television within the Somali defense ministry remains unclear.
