Hargeisa, Somaliland (Horn Observer) Somaliland police raided the home of freelance journalist Shaafici Shaaciye and detained him in overnight raid, local media reported, making Somaliland one of the most hostile regions for critics and journalists.

On the night of 16 January, 2025, heavily armed security forces, under the orders of the Somaliland police Commissioner Major General Mohamed Aden Saqadhi Dabagale,  raided the home of the journarnalist Shaafici Shaaciye and detained him.

According to Shaacifi Shaaciye media, a facebook page, the journalist founded, Journalist Shaaciye appeared before the court in Hargeisa on 18 January and was remanded for seven days.

Its not yet clear reasons behind the raid of the journalist’s home and his detention.

However, the journalist  fled to Mogadishu for safety after receiving threats from  Muse Bihi’s administration for exposing government abuses including violations committed by Somaliland Police against innocent civilians.

Gen. Dabagale  who was known for suppression, threats and arbitrary arrests against  civilians for only expressing their views, was fired on Friday by Somaliland president Abdirahman Irro after launching a complete reform of the army units.

Somaliland silences critics by detaining them.  On 31 December 2024,  Somaliland police detained Naciima Abwaan Qorane, who campaigns for Greater Somalia. She still remains behind bars.
