Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — 2nd December 2025 Cambridge Academy Ethiopia is proud to announce a landmark sporting achievement as its U11 football team secured the school's first-ever international championship trophy at the prestigious ISG Dubai Gulf Winter Tournament, held in Dubai last week.


This historic victory marks a major milestone for the school, its sports programme, and youth football development in Ethiopia. The annual tournament, hosted by Robin Sharpe, brings together top youth teams from across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Cambridge Academy travelled with a delegation of 21 student-athletes and 12 parents, led by the school’s Director Professor Gemechis, Primary Head of Department Mr. Evans, and coaches Mr. Samson and Mrs. Hiwot.

Strong Performances from Both Teams

U9 Team Shows Courage and Promise the U9 squad delivered determined performances throughout the competition, displaying resilience, teamwork, and excellent sportsmanship against experienced international opponents. Team Captain Eliad Mesfin impressed with two goals and outstanding leadership, while several promising Year 3 players stepped up confidently during crucial moments.

U11 Team Claims Historic Victory

After a challenging opening match against Real Madrid Academy (Spain), the U11 team recovered strongly with a 1–1 draw against CFFA Dubai, featuring a superb goal from Captain Kidus Tizazu. Their consistent performance secured a place in the knockout stage.

In the grand final against Swagger FC 2, the match ended in a tense draw, sending the championship to a penalty shootout. Cambridge Academy penalty takers Nahom Kidanemariam, Leul Elias, Azaria Dereje, Samuel Eyob, and Adiel Mulugeta scored with confidence.

Goalkeeper Heriyakos Eyob delivered a decisive save in sudden death, followed by captain Kidus Tizazu, who scored the winning penalty to secure the international title.

A Milestone for Ethiopian Youth Sports

Speaking after the victory, Professor Gemechis, Director of Cambridge Academy Ethiopia, stated: "This historic achievement demonstrates the extraordinary talent and discipline of our students. It also shows that Ethiopian youth can compete successfully on the global stage when given the right opportunities and support.”

Parents and staff celebrated alongside the players in Dubai, marking a proud moment for the school and the wider Ethiopian sports community.
