Mogadishu, Somalia (Horn Observer) Somalia's Ministry of Ports and Maritime Transport of the Federal Government of Somalia (MPTS) has this week officially registered a Somali-flagged vessel, Guney (IMO No. 8230417), in what believe aimed developing the country's blue economy and step toward restoring national oversight of the country's maritime sector.

The initiative aims to strengthen the identification, regulation, and management of vessels operating under the Somali flag and marks the first registration of a Somali-flagged vessel since the collapse of the central government in 1991.

The Ministry has called on business leaders and shipowners to take advantage of this development by registering their vessels in Somalia, contributing to the growth of the national economy and maritime industry.

This milestone forms part of the Ministry’s broader strategic plan and aligns with the Government’s National Transformation Plan (NTP), supporting efforts to develop Somalia’s blue economy and enhance its role in regional and global maritime trade.
