NAIROBI (HORN OBSERVER) Kenya has on Saturday announced a new directive to close down its international border with Somalia and Tanzania following increased import of COVID19 cases.
Addressing the nation on Saturday, Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta has declared that the number of Covid-19 cases in the country has risen to 830 after 49 more people tested positive. He said five more people had died, raising the death tally to 50.
Mr. Kenyatta declared closure of the border Saturday noting the number of COVID19 cases into the country from Somalia and Tanzania was fast increasing. According to Mr. Kenyatta, 43 cases reported last week had crossed the border from neighbouring Somalia and Tanzania.
President Kenyatta said the closure of the border will affect all human and vehicular transport with effect from May 16. Cargo vehicles will however be exempted on condition that all the drivers are tested for the disease.
Somalia currently has over 1357 cases with 55 fatalities. Kenya recorded 49 cases Saturday bringing to over 800 the national tally.
To intensify the fight against the virus, the Kenyan leader said that his government had extended the dawn to dusk curfew in the capital Nairobi and other cities by another 21 days until June 6.
