MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) - Resolve the current political crisis in the country to organize free, fair, credible and inclusive elections, UN told Somali leaders, amid efforts by the international community to convene a meeting with the Prime Minister and FMS leaders bore no fruit.

In a statement, UN Security Council emphasized the need to hold FGS-FMS talks "at the earliest opportunity" to break the political impasse that led the delay of the elections in the country.

"UN Security Council called for Somalia’s leaders to engage in a constructive dialogue at the earliest opportunity without precondition to resolve outstanding issues on the legitimate basis of the 17 September agreement and the recommendations of the 16 February Baidoa Technical Committee,” the statement reads in part.

They continued to commend the role of the African Union in promoting dialogue between Somalia’s parties and recalled the importance of finalizing the endorsement of the Somalia Transition Plan.

The UN remarks come hours after Puntland and Jubbaland states which are bitterly opposed to the federal government, accused the outgoing president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo of of sabotaging electoral talks between Somali federal government and its member states.

"The Federal Member States of Puntland and Jubaland is concerned that senior officials of the outgoing Federal Government are obstructing the conference in Mogadishu," a joint statement by the states said.

The two states further said that last week's talks with their regional counterparts, Galmudug, Southwest and Hirshablle, did not bear any fruit.
